Ingredients: (Makes 5 servings)
- 4 cups water
- 4 heaped tbsp corn starch
- 1 tbsp sugar
- A little rose water (optional)
For Serving:
- Rose syrup
- Cold water
- Sugar (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Mahalepi Mixture:
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the water, corn starch, and sugar. Stir continuously with a whisk to prevent lumps from forming.
- Once the mixture starts to thicken, add a little rose water if desired. Continue stirring until the mixture thickens completely, which should take about 15-20 minutes.
- Set the Mahalepi:
- Rinse the serving bowls with cold water to make it easier to unmold the Mahalepi later.
- Divide the thickened mixture evenly among the bowls and allow them to cool completely at room temperature.
- Chill the Mahalepi:
- Once cooled, transfer the bowls to the refrigerator and chill for 3-4 hours until fully set.
- Serve:
- To serve, invert a bowl of Mahalepi onto a deep plate.
- Add as much rose syrup as desired and pour cold water over the Mahalepi.
- If you prefer a sweeter dessert, you can sprinkle additional sugar on top.
